Family Night Devotions

Once a week we head out to a family night at our church, complete with dinner, a family service that includes worship, a family devotion time, a goofy skit and a message that follows a monthly theme. Afterwards the kids go to childcare (or their favorite time with friends as they call it) and the grown-ups get to fellowship, pray and participate in a Bible study. The last couple weeks the fellowship group has been on parenting - and let me tell you it has been very good!

Dear Husband and I are on the family night committee and try to help as much as we can, although it tends to be on the not-very-much-side seeing as how we have 5 little ones and live a fair distance...But it was our turn to do the family night devotions and I thought I'd share it with y'all. The theme this month has been friendship - how fitting! Grab a Bible, some kids, dear husband and enjoy!
(I'll include the Bible story at the bottom just in case)

Virtue: Friendship ~ spending time with someone you trust and enjoy.

This Week’s Theme: A true friend will spend time with you.

This months verse: “A friend loves at all times. He is there to help when troubles come.” Proverbs 17:17

1. READ IT! John 21: 1-14

While you read the Bible story (John 21: 1-14) have others act out the characters in the story

2. KNOW IT! Try to answer as many questions as you can.

1. What part of the story stuck out to you and why?

2. Do your best to answer the following skill-testing questions!

        A.  When Jesus appeared again to His disciples, was it by:
a) The Supermarket  b) The Laundromat c) The Sea of Tiberius d) The Sea of Galilee

        B.  What were the disciples doing early that morning?
a) Singing a song  b) Sleeping in c) Drinking coffee d) Going fishing

        C.  What did Jesus do when He called out to His disciples? Who can narrate the best?

        D.  How many times after Jesus had risen from the dead did He appear to His disciples?

        E.  Based on this story, do you think it was important to Jesus to spend time with His disciples? How come and how did Jesus show this?

3. Draw your favourite part of the story and tell everyone why it was your favorite!

4.    LIVE IT! (To be done as a family some time during the week.) This week plan a day when you can spend time with some friends! Whether it’s a play date, dinner, tea or breakfast even, have someone over or stop by a friend’s house. Purpose to make them feel loved and cared for. Have fun and be blessed!

JOHN 21:1-14

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberius. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?"
"No," they answered.
He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some."When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.
Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught."
Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
